Meet the Team: Mike Wilson
Wilson Teis Principal Mike Wilson has been helping grow the team and develop relationships with clients for over 25 years, but life is not always about hard work for Mike.
Here he shares a few of his outside interests when he’s not spending time helping clients.
1. What do you do when you are not looking after clients?
Apart from spending time with my family and grandchildren, I love motorcycle riding. I’ve had a licence for about 12 years and I’m currently riding a Ducati Monster. It’s my second bike; I had a Honda CB 900 that I sold to my son. Three of my sons ride with me and it’s a great way to spend time together as family. If money was no objective I’d probably stick with the Ducati, but get a brand new one … these days sports bikes are just a bit too powerful for me.
2. You’re a footy fan Mike, what team do you support?
I’m a lifelong Reds supporter here in Queensland but I’ve also got a long standing commitment to community based rugby and I’m a former president and now committee member at Logan City Rugby Club. They have great facilities and I was a part of the team that helped them get government funding for the facilities.
3. If you weren’t an accountant what would you be?
I fell into accounting by accident when I was in my twenties but I’ve always had affinity for academia so I would probably be an academic or professor, maybe lecturing in something like anthropology.
4. What are the most exotic holiday destination you’ve ever been to?
On our European trip in 2015 we stayed in the north of Italy in a villa near Pisa and that was pretty exotic. It was also the first long holiday Coral and I had taken in 20 years.
5. What’s the most unusual thing about you that the team don’t know?
I really enjoy mathematics, in particular calculus. I can’t do calculus anymore but I love reading about its history and evolution. Maybe I would have been a maths professor in another life.
6. What do you enjoy most about leading the team at Wilson Teis?
I enjoy building a supportive relationship with the younger people in the team making their way in the profession. I like helping them develop their relationships with clients, and teaching them to communicate in a non-technical, human way.
7. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I am interested in numismatics especially Australian pre-decimal currency, but I raised a family instead of buying coins!
